Kristian Berg Harpviken

Kristian Berg Harpviken will share his valuable insights during our closing session.

Kristian Berg Harpviken, The Norwegian Nobel Institute:

«I firmly believe that a combination of practical problem-solving and critical outside-the-box thinking is an unbeatable prescription for making a difference. Thanks to a farming background, spending long nights working to deal with seasonal peaks, but also drawn into engaged political discussions at the family dinner table, I learnt that hard work and intellectual curiosity are nothing but compatible. Today, when I get to talk to people in conflict zones who go on with their lives under incomprehensible strain – even sacrifice – I realize how uniquely privileged I have been, and I feel a strong obligation to give back.

As a researcher, I value competing perspectives, meticulous methodology, and qualified conclusions. As a research leader I am convinced that strategic direction comes not only from vision, but also from a musicality to changing opportunities, so that ultimately operational agility and attention to detail is decisive for success. Knowledge is power, and as researchers we have an obligation to act ethically and communicate truthfully. Democratic societies are built on open and respectful exchange, and at no time in recent history has that seemed more important.

My own dedication is to research and education, to foster and communicate insight about what drives conflict and misery, and how it can be overcome. This I pursue through my own research leadership, my supporting role on the board of multiple organizations around the world, and ultimately as an engaged and (self-)critical citizen.»
