Pål Preede Revheim will talk about:

«Breaking Ground in Winter: Inductive Road Charging for Bus Through Ice and Innovation

What happens when cutting-edge technology meets the harshest of climates?»

This pioneering project explores the world’s first test of dynamic inductive charging under extreme winter conditions. Can 120 kW of power really pass through 8 cm of asphalt and 15 cm of snow and ice? From concept to route operation, we reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and the surprises that emerged along the way. What challenges were invisible until they hit us head-on? And how can pilot projects accelerate learning and reduce risk?

In the summer of 2024, Trøndelag County Municipality and AtB built Norway’s first test stretch of electric road at Sandmoen, south of Trondheim. The stretch is approximately 80 meters long and enables wireless charging of buses (and other vehicles) with up to 90 kW while driving and 120 kW when stationary.

During the winter of 2024–2025, we conducted daily testing to evaluate how the technology performs under harsh winter conditions. Since May 2025, we have operated (almost) daily scheduled service on three bus routes in Byneset, just outside Trondheim.

Pål Preede Revheim is a Project Manager  in Technology and Business Development at AtB. He holds a PhD in Renewable Energy and an MSc in Applied Statistics, and has spent the past 12 years working at the intersection of energy and transport.

Pål has previously contributed to the planning of charging networks for electric vehicles, the electrification of several Norwegian ports, and the deployment of electric buses and passenger ferries in Eastern Norway. He is currently working toward the goal of making all buses in Trondheim emission-free by 2029.
