Inside the Lion Cage – the Societal Risks of Software Defined Vehicles

In this thought-provoking session, Tor Indstøy and Arild Tjomsland share findings from The Lion Cage Project, an independent investigation into the data flows and vulnerabilities of modern connected vehicles. What began as a personal curiosity project — exploring the data connections of Tor’s NIO ES8 has evolved into a deeper inquiry into how modern Software Defined Vehicles communicate and the societal risks they pose in a world with increasing geopolitical tensions. The findings raise critical questions for anyone working with autonomous or connected mobility: What does national security and resilience look like in a world where vehicles continuously sense, record, and share information with the companies that produced them?

Tor Indstøy and Arild Tjomsland form a distinctive duo bridging cybersecurity and sustainability in the rapidly evolving landscape of connected mobility. Tor leads the Risk Management and Threat Intelligence teams at Telenor Global Business Security. He spearheads Telenor’s Responsible AI initiative and contributes to ISO committees on security and ethics. Before joining Telenor, Tor worked in the finance sector and at the Central Bank of Norway, where he led security for the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund—the Government Pension Fund of Norway. Arild Tjomsland, a senior advisor at the University of South-Eastern Norway with a background in industrial design, brings extensive experience in innovation, business development, and strategy. As project leader for The Lion Cage Project and board member of SAMS (Sustainable Autonomous Mobility Systems), Tjomsland complements Tor’s expertise in digital risk with a systemic, design-driven approach to resilience and responsible technology.
